Dedicated to children…

История кинематографа | 28.11.2024
Our life is so interesting that almost every day we can celebrate some kind of holiday. National, national, professional, personal-or funny, like Cat Day or Coffee Day. But the holiday, which is celebrated annually on January 8, is special, having a direct bearing on our future. This is the Day of Children's Cinema in Russia.

Children's Film Day is a young holiday. It was established in 1998 by the Government of the capital on the initiative of the Moscow Children's Fund. But why on a cold January day? Why not in the summer, closer to Children's Day, during the happiest period for children - the long summer holidays?

The fact is that on January 8, 1898 (that is, more than a century ago), the premiere of the first children's film in our country took place. The famous GUM, which then had a completely different name - the Upper Shopping Malls, opened its doors to children. It was in his building that the first stationary “Electric Theater" was opened. And so, on a cold winter day, the first children's program was organized at the Electric Theater. Subsequently, this event turned into a permanent screening of films for children, which was a huge success with the public.

Some may wonder: did children's films already appear at the dawn of cinema, when he was taking his very first steps? Yes, it is. At first, these were foreign films, for example, the films of J. Melies "An Incredible Journey" and "Gulliver among the Lilliputians". By the way, the young audience was absolutely delighted with them. Then, in the Russian Empire, they began to think about the need for their own film production. Since 1908, short films based on Krylov's fables, historical stories about Peter the Great and Ermak Timofeevich, chronicle films dedicated to the most important events or sights of Russian cities have appeared.  The children were also shown adaptations of Russian classics and folk tales suitable for their age. The first full-fledged children's films were “Santa Claus” and “The Frog Princess”, filmed in 1910 and 1911, respectively.

But the real heyday awaited the domestic children's cinema after the revolution. The Soviet government understood the huge role played by the upbringing of the younger generation. And since “Cinema is the most important of all the arts for us,” children's cinema began to develop by leaps and bounds. Films for children were shot even during the civil War: "Gerasim and Mumu", "Alyoshkin's Pipe", "The Girl with Matches" and "The King's New Dress".The adventure film "The Red Devils", shot in 1923 by director I. Perestiani, was a huge success.

Children's cinema kept up with the times and solved the tasks that faced the whole society. It glorified labor and front-line exploits, raised moral issues. This continued until the nineties, when not only children's cinema, but also the entire domestic cinema was in decline. And the establishment of a special holiday in 1998 became a hope for a better future for this most important part of our culture. Every year more and more films for children are being shot in our country. Of course, they are still far from the indicators of the Soviet era. But there are already very bright and successful premieres, for example, “At the behest of a pike” or the series “The Last Hero” - the first messengers of the speedy revival of children's cinema in Russia.
