What should a child be able to do in order to participate in advertising
Как пройти кастинг? | 06.03.2025Advertising is one of the most accessible areas for aspiring young actors. It doesn't require years of acting experience, as in movies, and even without a professional education, a child can successfully pass the casting. However, there are several key skills that set some children apart from others and make them more in demand. As a casting director who has seen hundreds of auditions, I can say that success on set depends not only on appearance, but also on preparation.
The ability to naturally stand in front of the camera
The main thing that is required of a child on the set of an advertisement is organicity. The camera instantly reveals the stiffness, tension, or artificiality of emotions. Confidence in front of the lens is formed in advance, so it's better to start preparing at home. The child should get used to videography and not be afraid of the camera, as well as be able to remain himself even under the close attention of cameramen, directors and assistants.
It is useful to train in the form of a game. For example, you can invite your child to act out scenes with toys, record short videos on your phone, or just talk about your day on camera. The more experience he has with the lens, the easier it will be for him to act on the set.
Basic acting skills
Although advertising does not require complex acting, it is important that the child is able to convey emotions. Depending on the project, he may be asked to express joy, surprise, interest, thoughtfulness, or even a slight sadness. The main thing is to make it look natural.
You can train your emotional expressiveness with small exercises. For example, ask your child to depict joy when he sees a favorite toy, or surprise if he is offered something unusual. It is useful to repeat cartoon characters, imitate their intonation and facial expressions.
The ability to act without words is also appreciated in advertising. Sometimes a child just needs to smile, look in the right direction, or pick up an object, and it should all look natural.
Good diction and text handling skills
In some commercials, the child will have to say several phrases. If the speech is unintelligible or the intonation sounds too monotonous, there will be infinitely many duplicates. To avoid this, it is worth working on diction in advance.
It is useful to do simple articulation exercises: tongue twisters, pronouncing sounds in front of a mirror, reading texts with different intonations. Good diction helps not only on the set, but also in life – the child becomes more confident in communication.
It is also important to be able to memorize the text quickly. Even if the script is short, there are situations when the phrase is suddenly changed right on the set. In such cases, the child should adapt to new cues without stress. You can train in advance – come up with small skits and teach them together so that the child gets used to such tasks.
Ability to work in a team and follow directions
There are always a lot of people on the set: director, cameraman, assistants, makeup artists. The child must be ready to listen and fulfill the requests of adults. This does not mean that he should be an ideal obedient performer, but basic discipline is extremely important.
You can train this skill through games. For example, the game "Sim says" (in the Russian version – "Edible-inedible") It teaches you to respond quickly to commands. You can also arrange small home "filming", where an adult plays the role of director and gives the child different tasks – to smile, turn to the side, to be surprised.
Filming can be long and exhausting, so it's important to explain to the child that even if you have to repeat the same thing several times, it's okay. The main thing is to keep a positive attitude.
All this will help the child not only get into advertising, but also feel confident on the set, which will increase his chances of further projects.
