How is the casting process for children's roles?

Как пройти кастинг? | 11.03.2025
Getting cast in a child role is just the first step on the way to acting in a movie, commercial or theater. Many parents and young actors present this process as a simple formality: he came, showed up, got a role. But in fact, casting is a serious selection process that evaluates not only the child's appearance and talent, but also the child's willingness to work in front of the camera, his emotional stability and the ability to quickly adapt to directing tasks.

First stage: application and pre-selection
Most often, the casting begins long before the meeting with the director. Parents or agents send applications for participation, attaching photos, a video card and a resume of the child. It is important that the materials are up-to-date: fresh photos, a well-written description of the experience (if any) and a well-recorded video where the child introduces himself, tells a little about himself and demonstrates his ability to work on camera.

If the child fits the parameters of the role, he is invited to the casting. Sometimes before that, they ask you to record a self—test - a video where a young actor plays a small fragment from the script. This is especially true in cases where the casting takes place in another city or country.

The second stage: a live meeting with the casting director
Face—to-face casting is always an exciting moment. The first thing they do at such a meeting is to evaluate the child's appearance. This is not always associated with classic "beauty": it is more important that the type matches the image conceived by the screenwriters and the director.

Then the casting director asks the child to introduce himself. It is important that he does this confidently, but naturally. Excessive memorization can look unnatural, and excessive shyness can prevent you from opening up. Sometimes they ask simple questions: about hobbies, school, hobbies. This allows you to assess how sociable the child is and whether he knows how to hold himself in front of the camera.

Next comes the most important part — performing acting tasks. A child may be asked to act out a scene from a script, recite a poem, or even improvise in a given situation. What is important here is not so much the perfect execution as the ability to quickly get involved in the process and show individuality.

The third stage: trial shooting and final approval
If the casting director liked the child, he may be invited to additional auditions. It can be working in tandem with other actors to test the chemistry between the characters, or trial shooting in makeup and costume to understand how he looks in the frame.

The final decision is left to the director and the producers. Sometimes the choice is made immediately, but more often several candidates are considered and a decision is made after a few days or weeks. It is important for parents to understand that even if a child reached the finals but did not get the role, this does not mean that he failed. In movies, the smallest nuances are important, and sometimes the choice is made according to completely unpredictable criteria.

The main thing is to help the child maintain motivation and a positive attitude. Casting is a part of the acting profession, and the ability not to be afraid of rejection, to try again and again is one of the main skills for a future star.
